PUN-OFF 2010 PunPunPun.com > PUN-OFF 2010
Thank You For A PUNNIEST OF SHOW First Place in P.O.S. went to the team of Justin Golbabai & Kelly Dupen who scored a 37 out of a possible 40 points. The dynamic duo were anything but idol with their well rehearsed dramatic presentation of a fruitless lover's quarrel over vegetables. Give me a broccoli, peas! By a tie-breaking applause vote, second place honors went to 4th time contestant, Jacob Dodson who scored 35 points for a path o'logical narrow-tive featuring Austin street names. Avenue guessed he's from Austin? Also scoring 35 points to claim the bronze medal was the mother/daughter team of June Morris & Judi Dean who wagged their tale in a fairy punny way that was anything but Grimm. (Later on even the mother goose on to compete in PunSlingers.) PUNSLINGERS Winnowing down the 32 contestants in this event found us battling at warp speed in the vinyl heat on the topic of "CRIMES." This battle featured a face off between two repeat offenders. Last year's silver medalist, Ben Ziek of Glendale CA eventually bested former Austinite, Jason Epstein. Third place PunSlinging honors were shared by returning 2009 champ, Matt Pollock of Austin and neophyte, Jack White who appears to be a local, but obviously competes in an altered state. mmMVP AWARD & highlights By a vote of his peers, P.O.S. silver medalist, Jacob Dodson also won the coveted mmMVP trophy (McClughan Memorial Most Viable Punster Award) We can't say he walked away with it because he laughed early due to a case of premature jocularity. Gary Hallock accepted the award on his behalf, as well as thanking him for helping assemble the colorful stage backdrop. Marking his 20th year as "Leerless Feeder" of the event, Gary Hallock <gary at hallock.net> also received a "surprise award" on his own behalf. For showing his mettle over a score of jeers, Gary was plagued with atrophy by O.Henry Museum Curator, Valerie Bennett and fellow emcee/ t-shirt artist, David Gugenheim. "You're welcome!" Corngratulations to all contestants and participants. The crowds have groan this year and the weather was punny, but not hot. Watch the website punpunpun.com for P.O.S. transcripts, photos, links to video and many other interesting things. The date for next year's Pun-Off is tentatively set for May 21, 2011. (Please ask the O.Henry Museum before you engrave this date on your head's tone.) <http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/ohenry/punoff.htm> Contact UsFor site information or to volunteer, call the O.
