Steve Brooks - 2010 P.O.T.Y. Winner

Steve Brooks

Every year, since 1988, the International Save the Pun Foundation has bestowed upon a worthy wordsmith, the dubious title of "Punster of the Year." (P.O.T.Y.) In 2002 this induction ceremony was re-located from Chicago to Austin, Texas and a dinner held on the eve of the O. Henry Annual Pun-Off World Championships. This festive evening culminates in a "roast" by a room fool of sharp wits where the POTY's peers carve up the winner. (Know more, Mr. Knife guy?) This year's dinner is 7 PM, Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Old Spaghetti Warehouse. (Registration on the Dinner Page)

Steve Brooks came to his first Pun-Off in 1992, and he won it the following year, with his rewrite of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address using the names of Texas towns. Routines like "Tex-Mexistentialism," "Carstianity" and "Inhale to the Chief" have added to his trophy collection. He keeps up the wordplay in songs like his New-Age Western, "Yoga Lady," and even in sermons he gives at Unitarian Universalist churches around Texas, on topics like "Pundamentalism." Says Steve, "If Jesus could bestow Heaven's blessings on whores, thieves and tax collectors, surely he would not withhold them from a humble punster."

CONGRATULATIONS, STEVE !!
